Mobile on Fire

Views | |

Mobile on Fire is a free clone of Frets on Fire, a music game created by Unreal Voodo group.
It's also completely written in Python. I was originally written for N95-2 but it works also on other mobiles.

NOTE: I scan every file I publish here but everything is possible. So if your antivirus picks something up, terminate my app immediately and let me know about this!

How to Install:

1. Download the game (Mobile on Fire.sis), the link is on the bottom of this page.
2. Download and install Python for Series 60 on Phone's Internal Memory (Drive C).
3. Download and install misty: it's a PyS60 module. Google it.
4. Install the game (Mobile on Fire.sis) also on the Phone's Internal Memory (Drive C).
5. Create a folder called MoF this time on Phone's Memory Card (Drive E).
6. Create two folders inside of it: Mods, Songs.
Mods folder is for game's mods and skins.
Songs folder is for game's songs.
7. Place all of your converted songs (see Converting Notes) in the Songs folder.
8. Run the game and enjoy it!

Other files:

Guitar Hero.rar - a skin, which makes the game look like Guitar Hero(tm) III
Mobile On Fire Extended Skin.rar - default game skin but with additional special effect
Tools.rar - a package containing all tools needed for notes conversion.

Possible Problems:

Problem #01: The control buttons don't work.

Cause: Buttons were not mapped properly.

Solution: Read TIP #01: it contains the solution.

Problem #02: The FPS value is very low.

Possible cause of the problem #01: Your mobile is too slow.

Solution: None.

Possible cause of the problem #02: You're using an old version of the game.

Solution: Keep your copy of the game up to date.

Problem #03: After changing the skin, the whole game does not launch or selecting a song returns instantly to the main menu.

Cause: The skin, which was selected contains errors. Solution: None. You need to reinstall the whole game!

More to come...

Game Tips:

TIP #01: When a song is too difficult to play or the control buttons don't seem to work, go to game's Options and select Controls. A menu will appear, showing all mapped keys and additional two options: Reset and Create New. If you press Reset, all mappings will get deleted. To add a new control, select Create New, press the button you want to map an action to and select an action for it from the multi-selection list that will appear. Note that you can pick multiple actions for one button.

TIP #02: If the fps meter irritates you, remember that you can always hide it, by choosing Hide/Show FPS from the options menu.

Converting Notes:

NOTE: The songs must be in .ogg format. Otherwise they won't get converted or there will be problems with synchronization.

Since I want the game to be fully compatible with Frets on Fire, I gave it the ability to convert notes between the format used by the PC version and the mobile one.
That means, that notes, created in Frets on Fire are in 99.9% (some of them just can't be converted) compatible with Mobile on Fire.

How to convert notes:
  1. Download package named Tools.rar.
  2. Extract application: Tools.exe from it.
  3. Run it: it's a self-extracting archive.
  4. The application will create a folder full of files and one batch file.
  5. Note: As the application closes itself, you can go and delete it. We won't need it any more.
  6. Run the batch file.
  7. A console window will appear. Press any key and select Convert Notes from the menu.
  8. Point the application to a folder, prepared later on, containing the songs each in a separate folder.
  9. Press Ok.
  10. When the application finishes, close it and move all the folders containing songs to a folder on your mobile's Memory Cardlocated in the MoF folder and called Songs (eg. F:\MoF\Songs).
  11. That's it!
Example: I've downloaded a packed song, called Something. It's archive is containing a folder and some files inside it. I create a folder called Songs and inside it another one, called Something. Now I extract from the folder inside the archive all files with .ogg extension and one file called notes.mid to theSomething folder.
Now I do as told in the tutorial above.

Creating Skins/Mods:

Creating skins to this game is rather complicated but possible.

First create a new folder for a skin, in our example it will be Amazing skin... Next, create two folders inside it: Graphics and Modules.

You need 4 files per one fret colour (Green, Red, Yellow, Blue and Orange): (instead of [fret], you should type one of the frets' colours, e.g. for a Redfret, you should type RedNormal.png, RedPushed.png, et cetera)
  1. [fret]Normal.png - it's a non-pressed image of a fret.
  2. [fret]Pushed.png - this image is shown, when you miss a note or, you've just finished playing one.
  3. [fret]Pushed2.png - this one is shown, when you're playing a note at the moment.
  4. [fret]Note.png - this is the image of a note itself.
And some more files: for the stage (stage01.png), neck (neck01.png), score multiplier (multiplier1.png, multiplier2.png, ...)andnote hit counter (counter0.pngcounter1.png, ...). The rest of the images: NeckMask.png and Counter-1.png should be downloaded from one of my skins.

Remember, that all of the images are by default scaled to 30x15. If you want to reduce game start-up time, resize them to these dimensions on your own.

Place these files in the Graphics folder.

Now download my Guitar Hero skin and extract fofutils2.py from the Guitar Hero\Modules folder into the Modules folder. Even if you don't know Python, you shouldn't have any problems with understanding the code, since it's written in a very simple way (I think...).

Now, run the Converter.bat (see previous tutorial), select create skin and point the app to the skin folder, in our case it's: Amazing skin.
Wait until the progress bar disappears and copy the skin folder (in our example: Amazing skin) to the MoF\Mods folder.

Applying skins/mods:

Your skins should be located every in a separate folder in the MoF\Mods folder on your phone's Memory Card. Once they're all there, run the game and press Options. Now select Select Mod from the menu and select your new mod. Go back and select Exit from the main game menu. After next startup, your skin will be applied.

NOTE: A badly written mod/skin can cause the game to crash and the only solution will be reinstalling it, so be careful!

Hope you enjoy the game!
